Seminole County Chamber challenged community to clean-up

The Seminole County Commissioners and the chamber of commerce joined forces to sponsor the Great American Clean-up/Keep Georgia Beautiful Campaign, which was held for three weeks during the month of May. We offered a challenge to the community, and will honor the winning TEAM with a “Supper Bash” sometime during the next few weeks.

TEAMS participating in the challenge were the Varsity Cheerleaders, Environmental Science & Biology Students, the Seminole County LEO Club, Boy Scout Troop 700, and Spring Creek Park Resort. In addition, the Seminole County Transfer Station offered free service for all households on Saturday, May 23.

These are the results of the clean-up: The five TEAMS picked up 2,120 pounds of trash along approximately 6 miles of highway frontage. The free day at the transfer station brought in 27,780 pounds of trash. So, collectively 29,900 pounds of trash were collected during our campaign. Do you wonder how much would have been collected if just a few more people had participated?

Even though the official clean-up campaign has ended for this year, we want to encourage everyone to be alert to how litter effects our community and do your part in helping keep our community clean. Littered neighborhoods can result in property values being lowered by as much as 15% and collectively it is estimated that over $28 million is spent annually to pick up litter in Georgia. A clean community also helps attract new businesses and residents.
