Many gas stations in Southwest Georgia have been fined for price-gouging their gasoline during hurricanes in previous years. Joe Doyle, Administrator of the Georgia Governors Office of Consumer Affairs announced that settlements have finally been reached as a result of the investigations into the price-gouging. Investigations began September 12, 2008 as a result of Governor Sonny Perdue’s Executive Order.
During a declared state of emergency, price controlled statutes are activated. Any goods or services that protect the health, safety or property of citizens are not to be sold at a higher price than what it would have been sold for before the declared state of emergency. Exceptions to this law are allowed but only if the business is able to document that they experienced and increase in cost of the good or services.
The Georgia Governors Office of Consumer Affairs received nearly 2000 complaints pertaining price-gouging or gas shortages. Ninety-one of the cases have been resolved with sixty-five of them being found guilty of price-gouging and twenty-six not found guilty. Among the sixty-five stations that have been fined, thirteen of them are in Southwest Georgia.
