Trash fire on Highway 27 South

Friday afternoon just before 1:00 pm, a sanitation truck on the way to the County Landfill caught fire. Apparently, the load of trash that was inside the truck caught fire on the way to the landfill, causing a very small brush fire in front of Trinity Baptist Church on Hwy. 27 South. (This was put out by a volunteer Firefighter not long after the call of the truck on fire went out).
Traveling for about four or five more miles the fire was reaching a dangerous level as clouds of smoke billowed from the truck and as Firefighters from Climax, Attapulgus, Fowlstown and Bainbridge responded, the truck stopped in the south bound left lane of Hwy. 27 just past Bower Station rd.
Responders were able to quench the fire after the load of garbage was dumped out onto the highway, causing a delay in southbound traffic, which left a few motorists wondering if the landfill had been moved to this location. No injuries were reported and after the fire was quenched all that was left was a cold, wet lump of garbage to be picked up....again.
