Tuesday night Bainbridge City Council members were presented a new ordinance by Major Walter Landrum and Suzanne Brandt of Keep Decatur County Beautiful. The ordinance would prohibit citizens from removing shopping carts from stores.
Major Landrum gave the Council a presentation on the issue, which included pictures from problem areas and statistics such as how many carts are being retrieved and how much it costs the businesses. Landrum stated that modern shopping carts cost the stores $225 - $350 each. He stated that having to either retrieve or replace the carts cost the store more money, which increases the prices for consumers.
The ordinance will be presented at a public hearing on October 6th and is expected to pass on October 20th. Citizens found with a shopping cart off of a stores premises will be issued a citation unless they have written permission from the store.
The twelve businesses in town that use shopping carts were invited to attend a Workshop in July to address the problem and work towards a solution, but only two of the twelve attended.
