Fifth Quarter Takes First Place with Students and Parents

Following the BHS varsity football game on Friday, October 15th, almost one hundred students congregated outside First United Methodist Church on Shotwell Street. The gathering, known as the Fifth Quarter, offers students in grades 6th through 12th a safe place to hang out after the games.

Live 101.9 provided the music to liven up the action. DJ s Rick Lewis from the Rockin’ 106.3 Jesus and Jammin' morning show and James from the Live 101.9 Just James Radio Show hosted a live remote broadcast inviting other students to join in the fun. Beverages were provided as students socialized around a fire. One student even brought a guitar while others sang.

Here’s what a few of the students had to say about it. 10th grader Noah Thorn said "everybody goes" and it is "something fun to do after the game". He also likes it because there is usually food. Taylor Strickland, a 10th grade member of Danceline, commented, "it’s a nice place to come with lots of things to do". Caroline New, also in 10th and a props girl for Danceline, likes "coming together with everyone" including "people you don’t normally hang out with".

The youth pastor for the church, fondly known by many as Jimmy-Steve, chaperoned the event. He says that the Fifth Quarter gives students an opportunity to hang out while giving them a safe place to be. Naturally, parents love this idea. There will be one more Fifth Quarter event this year after the homecoming game on Friday, October 29th. A bowling alley will be rented out at the YMCA where students can bowl at a discounted price and hand out with their friends. For more information contact Al at First Baptist Church 229-246-1563, Jimmy-Steve at First Methodist Church 229-246-1864, or John at Grace Church 229-243-0532.
