Lake Seminole Fishing Report for April 15, 2010

Lake Seminole - down 6 inches, stained, 75 degrees

Bass - Good. The bass are in all three stages of the spawn right now on the lake, but most of the bass have already finished spawning.  The post-spawn fish can be a little tough to catch, but with the right techniques and lures you can still be successful.

I went out on the lake yesterday and saw numerous fish guarding fry and cruising the flats. Look for places near sandbars that have grass or lily pads present. Fish these areas with either topwater, a jerkbait, or a floating worm.

Spro Dawg 100 Baby BassFor the topwater, I like to use a Spro Dawg 100 in Baby Bass color. The Baby Bass color works real well at this time, because the big males that are guarding fry are in protective mode against other bass that are trying to eat the fry. If you find a bass guarding fry that would not fall for the topwater, then you can opt for a Spro McStick in Blue Bandit color. You need a limber rod for the jerkbait because it is such a known bait for losing fish. I use a spinning reel with 10 lb. Flourocarbon line and a 6'6" Falcon Bucoo in medium action.

The last technique for catching these post-spawners is to use a weightless 6" Big Bite Baits Finesse Worm in any color of your choice. Color is not really that important; it is the action of the worm that draws the strikes. I like to use a spinning reel with 8 lb. Flourocarbon. I rig the finesse worm on a 4/0 Offset Shank Gamakatsu hook. When you rig the worm, you want to rig it fairly straight so that is does not twist your line. The action I like to use is simply twitching the worm from side to side and pausing in between every three to four twitches.
