    Restructuring in the Decatur County Sheriff Department

    Sheriff Wiley Griffin announced in a press release that his office is restructuring with a renewed emphasis towards "Community Oriented Policing", an aggressiveness on crime fighting and community service.

    Changes in the Sheriffs office are:

    Major Wendell Cofer has been promoted to Undersheriff. Cofer has 22 years experience in all facets of Law Enforcement and has obtained a Masters Degree in Public Administration.Undersheriff Cofer has served as Chief Investigator and Operations Commander with the Decatur County Sheriffs Department.

    Captain Janice Vankirk has been promoted to Jail Administrator. Captain Vankirk brings 17 years of work  experience at the Decatur County Jail, has recently received Georgia's "Detention Supervisor of the Year Award", and and has served in all areas of the jails operation, along with being a POST Certified Law Enforcement Officer.

    Lt. Donna Thompson is now the Assistant Jail Administrator bringing 15 years experience at the Decatur County Jail and has served in all areas of the jail operations. Lt. Thompson has also been assigned additional Community Outreach duties.

    Captain Chip Nix has been promoted to the position of Chief Investigator of the Sheriffs Criminal Investigation Division. Captain Nix has 11 years of Patrol and Criminal Investigation experience in local Law Enforcement. Captain Nix has investigated several major crimes that have resulted in the arrest and convictions of those responsible. Captain Nix has served as the Narcotics Investigator Supervisor for the past 5 years. Captain Nix also has lectured extensively in the community about Criminal Justice issues.

    Next, Investigator Julian Crowder is promoted to the position of Crime Scene Investigator in the Sheriffs Office Crime Scene Unit and will serve with Captain Gale Bowyer. Crowder brings 15 years experience in Law Enforcement and holds a Bachelors Degree in Criminal Justice. Investigator Crowder was formally the Police Chief in Senoia, Georgia. Crime Scene Investigator Bowyer holds a Masters and Bachelors Degree. Bowyer has 23 years of Law Enforcement experience and is a 2008 Graduate of the National Forensics Academy at the University of Tennessee.

    Captain Liz Croley has been promoted to the Administrative Assistant position of Sheriff Wiley Griffin. Captain Croley has 5 years Law Enforcement experience and holds an Associates Degree in Criminal Justice. Croley has previously coordinated the Sex Offender Registration Program and the Victim Services Unit. She will also have additional budgetary and administrative responsibilities added. Captain Croley has lectured extensively in the community about Criminal Justice issues and specializes in victims and women's defensive tactics.

    Sgt. Ed Moorehead has returned from 5 months of extensive training in K-9 operations while in Iraq. Sgt. Moorehead and Sgt. Michael Logue will be assigned to the Sheriffs PACE (Pro Active Criminal Enforcement) and K-9 Teams. The PACE Team has a primary function to aggressively fight crime in residential neighborhoods of Decatur County.

    Sheriff Griffin brings these members together with one attitude, bring all your effort. "I expect 110% effort from all our employees", Griffin states, "In these times of low budgets and a tough economy, our number one priority is still the safety and protection of our community".

    Restructuring sounds good, but I am concerned about Jim Morris. He's a good man and someone else got his job, what happened to him?
